Restoring the GWR 7200 class prototype steam locomotive

Boiler Move, 23 Aug 2010

Work is about to start on the restoration of the boiler. Before this could happen, because of health and safety reasons, the boiler had to moved to the rear of the restoration shed.

The big move took place on 23 August 2010. The large crane was brought in and, after some other artefacts were re-positioned, it was 7200’s turn. The crane was put in place and the boiler carefully lifted onto John Antell's low loader for the short journey around the Museum.

At the rear of the restoration shed, a place had been cleared ready to receive it. Once the crane had been driven around to the site, we started the lift. Before we could lower the boiler onto the sleepers where it was to stay, we had to turn it around in mid-air, avoiding the telephone wires.

When the boiler was on the ground, it had to be gently turned onto its side, to enable Pete Gransden, the boilersmith, to commence work on it.

All in all a good day's work.
